Each year, on June 15th, we take a moment to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, dedicated to honoring and protecting our seniors. At Graver Law, we believe in advocating for justice and serving as a voice for those who may not always be heard.
Elder abuse
It is so devastating yet common that elders who are so vulnerable get taken advantage of every day. Whether the abuse is in the form of physical, emotional, or financial, they are all a serious issues that often go unnoticed. One of the most common types is financial abuse, which can involve anything from unauthorized access to accounts, manipulation, or even misuse of a senior’s personal information.
How You Can Help Protect Seniors
- Encourage your elders to create a clear financial plan and keep their documents organized.
- Remind your elders to stay on the lookout for any suspicious changes in bank activity or unusual patterns.
- Speak up. If something feels off, report it.
Tips for Seniors to Stay Safe
- Protect your information: Never share personal details like your Social Security number or account passwords over the phone or email.
- Know who you trust: Adding a “trusted contact” to financial accounts can add an extra layer of security. Don’t trust calls, emails, or messages asking for money or personal info.
- Stay in touch: Talk to family or friends often so they can check on you.
- Don’t open the door to strangers: Be mindful of who is outside your home.
- Keep your home safe: Remove things you can easily trip on and add lights if needed.
- Wear a help button: A medical alert device that calls for help can be so beneficial if you’re ever in a situation where you fall or feel sick.
